Cucumber and Sustainable Fashion

Here at Cucumber, we've always tried to take the long view on sustainability.  You probably already know that aside from our  fabric, we manufacture and source everything within the UK.  We've taken as much plastic out of our chain as possible, and until we can remove one frustrating last step, we are simply recycling every bag we use until it is deemed more tape than bag.  We've set ourselves a goal to use 100% recycled packaging materials within the next three years and our ultimate aim is to use recycled fibres in our fabrics.
To this end we went to a fascinating conference sponsored by the CFE all about sustainability in fashion - and we learned a lot.
The key point is, there is no such thing as a 'green' fabric. You can only try and make an informed decision on which criteria is most important to you: durability, environment, local population, garment end of life. All are important, but no single fabric can tick all the boxes.

The good news is that more and more brands are building sustainability into their DNA (Cucumber is!) instead of stitching it in as a 'extra'.  The bad news is that environmental disasters due to fashion (the Aral Sea  once the fourth largest is down to 10% of what it was forty years ago due to cotton growing) have already had a devastating effect on our planet.

Cucumber Around the World

We like to think that Cucumber is just about everywhere! We've had enquiries, orders and pics from every corner of the globe.
Here's a fabulous Cucumber fan rocking our almost uncrushable dreamy drawstring trousers in...Rwanda. (Trust us when we say there is a hippo very nearby! ) We love the way she's styled them up with flatform espadrilles and silk tank.
If you'd like to be included in our monthly newsletter roundup, drop us a line with your detailsread this you may already be compulsively be watching Patrick Melrose on Sky Atlantic, following the frighteningly  realistic drug-fuelled trajectory of the eponymous hero. But Cucumber is compulsively reading the self-same novels the series is based on. Despite the dark lens used by Edward St Aubuyn, these have given us some genuinely LOL moments, particularly in 'Some Hope'. Crystal clear prose and an utter treat to read.

do this we're practically on our knees begging you to make the trip to the 'new' Royal Academy. Their enormous, beautiful, intelligent expansion and reconstruction has made it into a day long (week long!) place of joyful exploration. Truly something for everyone and if that's not enough the 250th Summer Exhibition opens on the 12th June.
